Sudanese Ladies Night

Art by Robin Brian

In October, I went to Sudanese Ladies Night held at school.  This is an annual tradition where everyone dresses in traditional Sudanese clothing and experiences a little of the culture of Sudan.  Fortunately, I had purchased a tobe shortly after coming to Khartoum on our first  shopping trip to Souq Shabbii, so I had an opportunity to wear it–as opposed to using it as a valance in my apartment!  There were two tea ladies, preparing traditional Sudanese coffee and tea along with the donuts that are so wonderful!  Walking along the streets in Khartoum, you can find these charming ladies along the sides of the streets just about anywhere you go.  It’s especially nice to go early in the morning to get the donuts fresh out of the oil.  They put them in a plastic bag, or in newspaper, sprinkle sugar on them, and they are wonderful!  (and only 1 SDG)  We were treated to a program of traditional dance  representing the various regions of Sudan, performed by a lovely group of our Secondary students.

  1. I’m extremely impressed with your writing skills and also with the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself? Either way keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one nowadays.. ceeegdkeaebg
